A choice of underlay for underfloor heating
Here at British Flooring, we stock some of the best underlay for underfloor heating from leading brands – such as Cloud 9, Duralay and ThermalStream, to name just a few.
Our collection of underfloor heating underlay is suitable for use with carpet and laminate floors and can optimise the system’s performance whilst ensuring underfoot comfort. What’s more, we pride ourselves on offering the most competitive prices possible and supply underlay in various thicknesses, lengths, roll sizes and tog ratings. So, whatever it is you need, you’re sure to find it with us.
Choosing the best underfloor heating underlay
Several factors determine which underfloor heating underlay is right for you, including:
- the type of underfloor heating system you have
- the material your flooring is made from
- the tog rating of underlay
There are two types of underfloor heating – hydronic (wet) and forced air.
With hydronic underfloor heating systems, a series of pipes are laid beneath the floor and hot water is pumped through them to warm your floors. On the other hand, forced air underfloor heating uses warm air which is passed through ducts laid under your floor.
Another thing worth considering is whether you need underfloor heating underlay for carpet or hardwood flooring.
We recommend ThermalStream underlay for use with carpets as it has a low tog rating. At 10mm thick with punched holes, it allows heat to transfer through your carpet and into your home efficiently and offers sumptuous levels of comfort underfoot. Duralay HeatFlow and Cloud 9 Radiance have low tog ratings as well and can be used in carpeted rooms with underfloor heating.
For laminate floors with underfloor heating, you also want a product with a low thermal tog rating – something like Olympic 5 underlay. This rubber underlay boasts a firm yet textured design, so works especially well in areas that are susceptible to heavy foot traffic, but also provides excellent soundproofing properties too.

Does underfloor heating require a special type of underlay?
When choosing underlay for underfloor heating, you need to pay careful attention to the carpet and underlay’s thermal resistance (also known as TOG rating).
While you want an underfloor heating underlay that insulates your space, you also want the heat from your system to be able to flow up and into the room.
With that said, we’d recommend a maximum of 2.5 TOG on top of your underfloor heating – whether that be a combination of a high tog flooring and low tog underlay, or vice versa.
All of our underfloor heating underlays are designed specifically for underfloor heating, with a low TOG rating, and a comfort rating of 4 or above.
Can I reuse my old underlay?
Underlay has a significant effect on how your flooring looks, feels, and wears.
You might be tempted to reuse your old one to cut your costs. However, it’s recommended to buy new underlay whenever you replace your flooring – whether it be carpet or hardwood. Plus, fitting an old underlay can reduce the lifespan of your flooring as it won’t provide the required support and can harbour lots of dirt and dust.
If you have underfloor heating, you need an underlay that can be used with such systems, preferably one with a low 0.35 TOG. Luckily, we provide a range of underfloor heating underlays – suitable for use with carpets, laminates and wood – and guarantee some of the most competitive prices around.
How much does underfloor heating underlay cost?
The cost of underfloor heating underlay is calculated per m² and can vary from £59.99 to £129.95.
Like anything else, the more underlay you need, the more you will pay. And opting for a luxurious product will cost you more.
However, if you have underfloor heating and have purchased an expensive carpet that’s designed to last for years, it’s worth investing in a higher quality underfloor heating underlay. In doing so, your carpet will be better protected and last even longer.
At British Flooring, we pride ourselves on offering top-quality underlay for affordable prices. So, why not take a closer look at the products we supply? We promise you won’t be disappointed.
